Review

Probably Cusco’s most sophisticated hotel, the Belmond Hotel Monasterio offers luxury accommodation and service in a superb setting. In our view, this hotel is all about the experience, which is created through its impressive architecture, original artwork and live music performances.

The Belmond Hotel Monasterio occupies the buildings of a sixteenth century monastery, in the tranquil Plaza Nazarenas; just a five-minute walk from the Plaza de Armas and a 10-minute walk from the arty district of San Blas. The hotel shares the same square as the Palacio Nazarenas and the Museum of Pre-Colombian Art, with its collection of pottery, jewellery and textiles dating back 3000 years.

The hotel centres around a cloistered courtyard with well-kept gardens and a 300 year-old cedar tree. At night the softly lit square is often used for jazz or string quartet performances. From the courtyard, vaulted corridors lead off to the hotel’s bar, sitting room and restaurants, and wide stone staircases lead upstairs to the guest accommodation.

Given the historical heritage of the building, the majority of the hotel’s 127 rooms and split-level suites are unique in size and decoration. A blend of rich wooden furniture, original artwork and antiques carries through the colonial style of the building, meanwhile modern touches such as flat screen TVs (which close away into antique cabinets), iPod docks, heating/air conditioning and oxygen vents (available in some of the rooms) help to bring the rooms up to date.

The hotel’s features include a lobby bar serving cocktails and canopés and two restaurants; one set within the Monasterio’s cloisters and the other set back from the courtyard. This restaurant with its high-valuted ceilings and arches provides an atmospheric setting for performances by Cusco’s top tenor and soprano 3-times a week. Although the hotel doesn’t have a spa, guests can visit the Therapy Suite for massages and aromatherapy treatments.
