Review

A small and intimate hotel in a quiet square in the centre of colonial Cusco, La Casona is set within a historic 16th century palace. Designed to be a home from home, the hotel is a haven of relaxation and tranquility offering discreet and personalised service. While it doesn’t have the size and grandeur of the larger 5* hotels in Cusco, for us the accommodation and level of service really stand out, making it one of our personal favourites.

Location

Located on Plaza de las Nazarenas, a 10 minute walk from the Plaza de Armas and a 15 minute walk from the neighbourhood of San Blas, La Casona is just across from the Museum of Pre Columbian Art and MAP Café. Set within a historic 16th century palace, which has housed the Spanish Conquistador Diego de Almagro and the famous ‘Libertador’ Simón Bolívar, the hotel is made up of 11 rooms and suites spread out over two floors.

Layout

Designed to make guests feel completely at home, La Casona doesn’t have a lobby or reception area but has a welcoming lounge facing the square and a pretty internal courtyard.

Rooms

Rooms at La Casona are divided up into 4 patio suites facing the inner courtyard and 5 balcony suites on the first-floor. All of the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, in keeping with the style and architecture of the building. This includes high ceilings, wooden floors and shutters, fireplaces, colourful Andean textiles and vases of local flowers and eucalyptus throughout. The bathrooms are equally as luxurious with roll-top bathtubs, heated towel rails, separate shower and toilet and double washbasins. For those looking for an extra special stay in Cusco, we’d recommend opting for the Plaza Suite which features sections of original wall paintings dating back to the house’s construction.

Features

Features at La Casona include a restaurant, bar and Yacu therapy room offering a range of massages and treatments. Breakfast includes a choice of eggs in addition to a delicious buffet of freshly baked pastries and rolls, accompanied by local cheese, cured meats, avocado and fresh fruit. If you find yourself in the hotel in the afternoon, afternoon tea is also served daily using home-grown leaves from Inkaterra’s Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Full of character, style and charm in the centre of Cusco

Like all hotels in central Cusco, the traffic in the morning and the square below can be noisy
