Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel

The Sumaq Hotel is located next to the Vilacanota River at the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain, on route to the citadel itself. Just a 10 minute walk from the train station, the hotel is far enough out of town to feel apart from the hustle and bustle, but it’s only a short walk to the town’s amenities when you need them.

The hotel is set out over 5 floors with the lobby and restaurant on the ground floor and guest accommodation on the floors above. Rooms are stylishly decorated with a mixture of earthy colours, rich furnishings and contemporary design features. The majority of the hotel’s 61 rooms and suites look out over the river and have a balcony, while a handful face the mountain at the back of the hotel.

The hotel’s modern facilities include a Spa, with a jacuzzi and steam room, in addition to a boutique and café bar, where cooking and pisco making classes take place. The hotel also has a first-floor terrace where afternoon tea is served. The main feature of the Sumaq, it has to be said, however, is its fantastic restaurant, which serves up a delicious blend of Peruvian and fusion cuisine.

For those staying in Machu Picchu Pueblo for 2 or 3 nights, the hotel can organise a variety of different activities and experiences, including walks to the Mandor Valley, birdwatching and traditional Pachamama ceremonies. Overall, we found the service and attention to detail here to be excellent, with welcome canopés and drinks on arrival and little gifts left in the rooms... a place to be pampered!
