Review

The Hotel Santa Teresa, now owned by Sofitel, is a luxurious boutique hotel in the hilltop district of Santa Teresa. Set within a restored colonial mansion, this hotel has character and style in abundance, with beautifully decorated rooms, an intimate bar and restaurant and a peaceful pool area with stunning views over Rio. The perfect place to sit back and take in Rio’s beautiful setting, the Santa Teresa Hotel is one of our favourites.

Being inside the leafy gardens of the hotel gives you the impression of being tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, when you are actually in the heart of Rio’s bohemian hilltop district of Santa Teresa. Only a couple of minutes walking from the Largo de Guimarães, the hotel is well-positioned to make the most of the neighbourhood’s bars, restaurants and artesian shops.

The hotel’s 40 individually decorated rooms and suites have been tastefully decorated with white floors, wooden floors, ethnic artwork and luxuriously soft furnishings. Furniture and artwork by some of Brazil’s best designers are placed throughout. Most rooms have French doors leading out onto terracotta-tiled balconies with superb views over Guanabara Bay and the surrounding mountains.

Set back from the street, guest accommodation is housed within the main building of an old colonial fazenda. Paved paths then lead through the garden to the outdoor pool and bar area with its panoramic views over Rio, and down a level to the hotel’s famous bar ‘Los Descasados’ and its world-class restaurant.

This hotel has all the facilities you need to not leave the hotel at all. For relaxing, there is the tranquil pool area, which boasts panoramic views over Rio and the relaxing Spa, which has Japanese baths, Hammam saunas and offers a menu of beauty treatments. Then for the evenings, there is the intimate cocktail bar 'Los Descasados' and the sophisticated restaurant 'Tereze' serving contemporary Brazilian cuisine. Combine all of this with attentive service and it would be tempting never to leave the hotel!

Overall, we were really impressed by the Hotel Santa Teresa and feel that it would suit clients looking to stay in a quieter, more intimate hotel. This is a superb option for those who don’t mind staying a bit further away from the beach and who are looking to experience a different side of Rio but still want all of the facilities of a five star hotel.

Stylish hotel, great views and excellent facilities.

Not suitable for those who want immediate access to the beach and Ipanema.
