Review

One of the most luxurious and comfortable lodges in the Amazon, Anavilhanas sits at the edge of the largest inland archipelago in the world and the Anavilhanas National Park. Located at the banks of the River Negro the lodge provides a variety of excursions exploring the flora and fauna of the local area offering chances to see the famous pink river dolphins and Amazonian Manatees. The lack of mosquitos in this area also makes it a great option for families.

Anavilhanas is located next to the Anavilhanas Archipelago and National Park on the Rio Negro in the state of Amazonas. The largest river archipelago on earth, the Park us made up of around 400 islands which are home to untouched native forest and rich plant and wildlife. Getting to the Lodge involves a three hour road transfer from Manaus or a 35 minute flight in a private plane.

The lodge is set back from the Rio Negro and surrounded by rainforest. There are 22 wooden cabins in total, which are divided into cottages, superior bungalows and panoramic bungalows with floor to ceiling glass windows looking out at the rainforest. The air-conditioned suites are made of reclaimed wood, decorated with local artwork and have their own private veranda with hammock.

A separate cabin holds the bar and restaurant where meals are served. The food is a mixture of international cuisine blended with local Amazonian flavours. There is also a floating jetty and swimming platform on the river, a swimming pool with views of the Rio Negro, an elevated observation deck and small shop selling local handicrafts.

The highlight of course is the daily-guided excursions, which include boat trips, feeding the pink river dolphins, canoeing, piranha fishing, night safaris, bird watching and cultural trips to visit local Amazonian communities. The dark waters of the Rio Negro help prevent the proliferation of insects in this area and there are almost no mosquitos around the lodge.

Creature comforts and superb nature viewing.

TVs and air conditioning won't be everyone's idea of what a stay in the Amazon should be.
