Review

Hotel Cabana del Lago has plenty of appeal and will please all types of travellers. It is a good choice for anyone wanting facilities, a relaxed environment, a good location, sweeping lake views and not much else. Compared to its competitors along the shore of Lake Llanquihue, it is definitely a step down and a simpler affair but we think it is not fair to dismiss it for this reason as you do get good value for money here. Families and older couples will like it in equal measures, perhaps not so much clients looking for something a little bit extra special though.

Location

Overlooking the beautiful Lake Llanquihue with views of volcanoes Osorno and Cabulco, Hotel Cabana del Lago is one of the fairly big hotels found by the lake shore. Despite its size with over 150 rooms, it manages to convey a relaxed and cosy alpine atmosphere. We like the fact that it is walking distance to the main shops and restaurants as well as a highly recommended fish restaurant just a few steps away, which we’ve tried called Casavaldes.

Rooms

The 157 traditionally furnished rooms come with large chest of drawers, table and chairs (superior rooms only) and all the mod cons (flat-screen TV’s, minibar, snack basket and so on) that you would expect from a hotel of this standard competing with other good front facing lake properties. However, the Lake Club apartment suites feature more contemporary design which we preferred. This recent conversion to the hotel has been developed with an eco blueprint in mind so you find plenty of untreated and up-cycled wood sourced from locally. The Lake Club accommodates a total of 32 rooms and Suite pads, which are perfect for couples and families looking for more independent living space and/or self-catering facilities.

Layout

Difficult to manoeuvre your way around at first as some of the rooms are located at disparate levels and a fair distance from the main entrance and lobby. Essentially, the hotel is made up of three distinct sections, the original cabanas with standard rooms on one side, the other side of the building with superior rooms only and the Lake Club, a separate modular wooden 2 storey development of apartments and Suite rooms.

Features

Plenty of communal areas for dining and lounging. With a lovely lake facing terrace fitted with Ponchos for guests to use when the temperature drops outside. The large barbeque terrace bar open is a lovely space to hang out and opens in high season with a tasty grilled meats menu. We like the bar area which has no shortage of sitting areas segregated across different spaces around the bar. The prevalence of wood is hard to ignore but it is not suffocating. There is a huge stone fireplace in the middle of this space as well. We did enjoy the generous breakfast and the pub style restaurant menu seemed interesting.

Too big? doesn’t stand out but is perfectly fine for a short break
