Skiing in Tierra del Fuego
With south facing slopes and some of the best powder in the world, Ushuaia has become a destination of note for many powder heads!
Located right down in the very south of Argentina, the ski resorts and slopes of Tierra del Fuego offer some of the best skiing to be had anywhere in Argentina and the world. Located just a stone’s throw from the main town of Ushuaia, it is easy to combine a few days on the slopes with some superb food, walking and outdoor activities. Moreover, with some of the only southerly facing slopes in the world, the powder that is offered here is indescribable!
Cerro Castor
The main valley for skiing in the region runs east to west around 30 minutes drive from Ushuaia itself. This is where the Andes range swings across the very southern tip of Argentina and, as mentioned above, is one of the only places in the world where the mountain slopes face south. The reason that this is significant is that, when the southern hemisphere is in its winter cycle, and the earth is titled away from the sun, the snow that falls on the lee of the mountain remains untouched by the sun for the entire period…thus creating some of the best and most reliable powder snow to be found anywhere!
The Cerro Castor resort is the largest and best in the area and offers a mix of off-piste, intermediate to advanced runs, and cross country skiing. Covering an area of approximately 400 hectares, there is plenty to keep even the keenest skier occupied. The season down here runs from the beginning of June until the end of September.
