Family Holidays to Chile

Some ideas for those planning a family holiday to Chile...

The diversity of Chile and the range of activities to do there; make it a great choice for family holidays. With breath-taking nature, awe-inspiring mountain ranges and pretty coastlines, there is more than enough to keep every member of the family happy! Chile’s summer coincides with European and North American Christmas holidays, making it a great destination for the Christmas break.

For active families, the main attraction of visiting Chile is the huge diversity of things to see and do here. In a matter of hours, you can go from the ice-covered fjords of Patagonia to the dry, lunar landscapes of the Atacama Desert. One day you can be walking past glaciers and through dense lenga forests in the Torres del Paine National Park, and the next you can be floating in a salt pool up in the area around San Pedro de Atacama.

Each area is well set up for activities, with hotels offering all-inclusive packages for families who want everything taken care of and B&B hotels for those who prefer to go off and explore at their own pace. For older families, the green and expansive Lake District is the home of adventure sports in Chile, with mountain biking, fly fishing, kayaking, mountaineering, and hiking all readily available. Meanwhile, the coastal area to the west of Santiago, with its small fishing villages, beach resorts and quirky coastal city of Valparaíso, is perfect for those looking for a bit of beach time at the end of their holiday.

Although the best time to visit Chile is during its summer, between November and March, it's still possible to travel to Chile during the European or North American summer break when you can visit the Atacama desert and take advantage of Chile's top-class ski resorts.
