Review

Where does one start in describing this superlative, boutique hotel in Quito’s Old Town? The property was built in 1905 by a French architect as a private house. The owner’s grandmother purchased the home in 1966 and in 2016 he converted the building into a 12-bedroom hotel that he and his wife designed and named in homage to his abuela. There are subtle, loving nods to Doña Carlota throughout this exceptionally stylish and intimate hotel. We were welcomed as part of the family, from the superb restaurant to the elegant gin bar on the roof terrace. As a crowning glory, the hotel is the first non purpose-built hotel in Ecuador to be awarded the LEED sustainability certificate, thanks to their water recycling program and producing 35% of their electricity via solar energy.

Location

In the heart of Old Town, both Plaza Grande and Plaza de San Francisco are within a 5-minute walk from Hotel Carlota. Being in such a central area means there is an abundance of restaurants and shops nearby. The impressive La Alameda Park is approx. a mile on foot. A transfer to from the international airport should take around an hour.

Layout

Whilst technically not a Spanish colonial building, the property shares many similarities, such as the central open courtyard. On the ground floor, this is the reception area that has a small lobby with chairs and a piano. There is also access to the Restaurant Carlota (where breakfast is also taken) and three bedrooms. Behind reception is a small ‘urban garden’ for guests to unwind. The two floors above are for the remaining nine bedrooms, plus a library/reading room that includes an honesty bar. From here, stairs lead up to the cosy roof terrace that boasts a bar and great views of El Panecillo. Under the stairs is a snug featuring a small wine ‘cellar’.

Rooms

Hotel Carlota features 12 rooms in total, all of which are named after local birds. There are 2 Lofts, 2 Suites and eight rooms. Each one is individually designed and we love the combination of exposed brickwork, high ceilings, vibrantly-coloured tiles and unique furniture. The Lofts are split-level accommodation with the bedroom on the mezzanine with a spacious lounge/dining area and kitchenette below. These are ideal for families, as they include a double sofa-bed (as do the Suites). We are particularly fond of the second-floor Campanaria Suite, as it has a double balcony overlooking the street. Two of the eight rooms are triples. For interconnecting rooms, there are two options: Loft & Suite or Loft & Queen room.

Features

Hotel Carlota’s roof terrace is a charming spot to enjoy a drink and the 16-cover restaurant hosts numerous ‘pop-up’ enterprises, which keeps things fresh and innovative. There are other places in the hotel to unwind outside of your room, such as the urban ‘garden’ or the library. However, with such an excellent location, we suggest getting some tips and a map from the fantastic staff and go explore the city!

Inimitable style and warmth that stems from passionate family ownership.

The ground-floor rooms are a bit small and noisy.
