Review

Built on the site of Gus Angermeyer’s cave, one of the first European settlers on Santa Cruz, the Angermeyer Waterfront Inn embraces the spirit of this pioneering family and combines it with the comfort of today’s mod-cons. The result is a stylish property built out of local materials, such as lava rock and native timber, with delightful views across the busy Puerto Ayora harbour. A water-taxi can whisk you - 24/7 - from the hotel’s private pier across to lively capital in just a few minutes. The best of both worlds for anyone after a peaceful stay, but still close to the action.

Location

Puerto Ayora is the most populous settlement in the Galapagos islands and the main town of Santa Cruz, located on the southern shore of the island. Academy Bay is by far the busiest harbour, making Puerto Ayora the main hub for day-trips and Galapagos cruises. The Angermeyer Waterfront Inn is located across from the main pier, on Angermeyer point. A water-taxi from the pier takes just a few minutes at a negligible cost. Arrival to Santa Cruz by boat from another island will terminate at the pier. Flights arrive into Baltra airport, on the north shore, and transfers across the island are approx. an hour.

Layout

On arrival at the hotel’s private pier, the first feature is the hotel’s waterfront terrace that looks across to Puerto Ayora. Guests are welcome to eat and or drink on the terrace. The reception is in fact built into the original ‘Gus Angermeyer cave’, where the German immigrant first built his primitive sanctuary to read and study. Behind the reception is the hotels main restaurant, along with the 3-storey complex containing the various categories of accommodation.

Rooms

The Angermeyer Waterfront Inn has 16 rooms, divided as 9 Standard rooms (one of which is a triple room) plus 7 Superior rooms, all of which have at least a small patio or balcony. There is also a Suite, featuring a spa-tub and duel-aspect balcony with fantastic views across Academy Bay. Finally, there is a ground-floor, self-contained quad-room (two queen beds) with a private patio, that is ideal for families. All accommodation has air-conditioning, TV, minibar, safety deposit box and bottle water.

Features

Although not exclusively a feature of the Angermeyer Waterfront Inn, a major advantage of the property is that it is a minutes’ stroll to Playa los Alemanes – a secluded beach with a tranquil cove to swim. As this is hidden away from the masses in Puerto Ayora, only guests of the handful of hotels on this side of the bay access the beach. The property itself has a restaurant, café (both with the option of indoor or al fresco seating), and a ’salt-water Jacuzzi’ built into the terrain. The sundeck is a great spot to watch the hustle & bustle of Puerto Ayora; whilst the restaurant is sculpted from natural rock.

Peacefully watching the busy world go by across the bay.

A little over-priced.
