Review

The largest of the three estancias based on the Peninsular Valdes, the Faro Punta Delgada, an ex lighthouse base and training ground for the army, still works, more or less as a sheep farm. The restaurant itself is fairly large and has good views out across the plains. Moreover, due to their location on the edge of the ocean, it is a good base to use for walks and horse riding in the area with or without a guide.

The main thing to consider when planning to stay on the peninsula itself and in one of the estancias, is that it will be in basic accommodation. Traditionally, the accommodation on many of the ranches was meant for the workers on the farm and so did not cater to modern concepts of the luxury. This is the case with the accommodation in the Faro Punta Delgada.

This is not to say that this is a huge imposition at all and, in fact, it adds to the overall experience of being immersed in this stunning wilderness. Made up of a few buildings, the main building of the Estancia Punta Delgada is used as the communal area with the dining room and infamous bar (the only bar) on the peninsular. Set in another block are the rooms that are all fairly simple but are comfortable enough for a few nights. The joy of staying out here is being able to get up in the morning and drive or ride for 10 minutes to the coast to watch elephant seals fighting or whales swimming past!

Total immersion in nature, riding, great food, good service

Simple accommodation, quite expensive
