Named after a Colombian waterlily found in the Amazon, the Sofitel shares the flower’s attributes of beauty and strength. Or so the hotel tells us! What we can say is that this 5-star property has successfully combined contemporary, French design with a Colombian influence.
Four Seasons Hotel Bogota raised the bar for luxury accommodation when it opened in 1993 and has maintained these high standards in the face of ever-growing competition. Arguably its greatest rival, The Sofitel, is right next door. This is no coincidence, being situated in the heart Zona T – Bogota’s finest dining and shopping district.
Hotel de la Opera consists of two separates houses: One from the Colonial period of the 1800s; and the other built during the Art Deco movement in the 1940s. The result is a fascinating hybrid with centuries of history. Indeed, it is claimed that the original colonial house accommodated the guards of none other than Simon Bolivar himself!
The Orchids Hotel is an intimate 6-bedroom property is the heart of the Candelaria neighbourhood. Dating back to 1892, the building was formerly a private home, which was restored and opened as a hotel in 2014. The neoclassic style has been embraced throughout, with each bedroom uniquely decorated with its own take of old-world charm!
The B.O.G. Hotel is a contemporary, uber-chic property that is perfectly at home in the trendy, buzzing La Cabrera district. Purpose built in 2013, renowned interior designer Nini Andrade took inspiration from Colombia’s two most precious commodities – gold and emerald. This luxurious aura flows through the hotel and is very much one for the Millennial generation.
The Four Seasons Casa Medina offers the perfect blend of historic architecture with contemporary design. Built in 1945 and converted into a hotel in 1988, Casa Medina has the distinction of being declared a monument of culture by the Colombian Ministry of Culture.
Casa Legado feels like home. Not your actual home, but the home you wish you had! Tucked away in the peaceful, quirky district of Quinta Camacho, Casa Legado offers 7 uniquely luxurious rooms (the owner Helena, is an interior designer) all inspired by the core theme of the property – family. Help yourself to their bikes, or an umbrella if it’s raining, and explore Bogota.
Colombia may not be the first destination in South America that you would think of for a family holiday or vacation but it is somewhere that has a great deal to offer. From exploring the wilds of the Amazon jungle around Leticia, to learning how coffee is produced, to seeing the golden masks of the pre-Colombian cultures, to swimming with dolphin in the azure waters of the Caribbean, there is a lot to see and do.
