Akademik Ioffe

With just 96 passengers on board and 65 staff and crew, the Akademik Ioffe is a small boat and has one of the best passenger to staff ratios out there. As a result, groups are made up of smaller numbers for zodiac landings, ensuring you get the maximum amount of time ashore.

Cabins are divided up into six different categories ranging from triple share cabins with upper and lower bunks through to suites with large front and side windows and a private lounge area. With female and male share dedicated cabins, the Ioffe caters to solo travellers as much as couples, families and small groups.

Onboard facilities include a library, lounge and bar for time in between landings as well as a theatre-style presentation centre, hot water spa, sauna and plunge pool. The boat also benefits from a spacious observation deck and bridge providing 360 degree views, which is great for photographers and wildlife watchers.

One of the main features of the Akademik Ioffe that we like is the flexibility on board. Expedition leaders will try to offer complimentary camping at least once on most Antarctic voyages in addition to a wide range of adventure activities such as kayaking, hiking, ski touring and snowshoeing. A photography expert is usually onboard to offer tips and advice, there are fitness and yoga classes and educational programs which cater especially to children.
