Review

The Charleston Santa Teresa is an imposing property within the warm interiors of Cartagena de Indias’ walled old city. Originally a 17th-Century monastery, it’s former lives include a factory and a police station; before being very tastefully converted into a hotel in 1996. Whilst it is unashamedly grandiose, we loved the relaxed vibe on the plaza terrace outside and the gorgeous sunsets from the roof bar & pool.

Location

The Charleston Santa Teresa is ideally located in the heart of the city’s UNESCO walled city. The famous Café del Mar is less than 500 metres away (where the postcard views justify the crowds); as is the historic Torre del Reloj – the main gate into the fortified city. Indeed, all of the walled city attractions can be easily reached on foot. Cartagena airport is approx. 20 minutes by taxi.

Layout

Rooms are distributed across two wings, a Colonial one that dates from the 17th century with high ceilings and hand painted wood; and a Republican wing, that was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is reminiscent of Versailles with gilt decoration and mirrors. The rooftop features a bar, swimming pool and La Terraza Restaurant, boasting uninterrupted views across the Caribbean and the city. Breakfast is served in the open courtyard inside the hotel. Immediately outside the Charleston Santa Teresa is their terrace featuring Harry’s Bar – offering food from Colombia’s most famous chef, Harry Sasson.

Rooms

The Charleston Santa Teresa hotel has a total of 71 rooms: 24 Classic, 12 Superior twin, 11 Premium Balcony, 24 Premium Deluxe. In addition, there are 16 suites: 6 Junior Suites, 5 Colonial Suites, 2 Master Suites and 3 Grand Suites. All come with air-con & heating, minibar and Cable TV. If you can’t justify splashing out on a Suite, we recommend the Premium Balcony rooms, offering great views of the city, where you can bathe in the warmth of the Caribbean climate. These are found exclusively in the Republican wing.

Features

The Santa Teresa has an excellent spa, with Jacuzzis, Turkish baths and separate spa treatment areas for men and women. The roof pool is for guests only and there is also a gym. With the roof bar/restaurant, Harry Sasson’s interior courtyard bistro and the outdoor Plaza Santa Teresa, you will not be found wanting for places to dine or drink in style!

The grandiose hubbub of a property on this scale will not be everyone’s cup of tea
