Review

The newest addition to the Inkaterra portfolio, Hacienda Urubamba is a relaxing retreat in the Sacred Valley to be enjoyed on route from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Offering superb accommodation, food and service as well as a range of activities to bring you into contact with local cultural traditions, this hotel is perfect for those who are looking to spend a bit of time in the Sacred Valley and understand why it was so important to the Incas.

The hotel is set within 100 acres of land near the town of Huayoccari in the Sacred Valley. About an hour’s drive from Cusco and a 40 minute drive from the town of Ollantaytambo, the hotel is an ideal stopping point on route from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Surrounded by mountains and agricultural lands, the hotel is a peaceful retreat which will take you off the main tourist track and into the heart of the Sacred Valley.

Resembling a country house, the hotel is primarily made up of a main building which houses the hotel’s living room, dining room and bar, along with twelve guest rooms. The rest of the accommodation is made up of 24 private casitas, which are set back from the main house and offer a more rustic style of accommodation, but with stunning views over the valley and more privacy.

Rooms are decorated to reflect the culture and history of the local area, with colonial furniture, Inca masks and colourful woven textiles. As in La Casona and the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, rooms come with their own fireplaces and are fitted with modern comforts, including Smart TVs, Wifi and central heating.

During their stay at the Hacienda, guests are invited to take part in activities which reflect the local traditions and way of life; by visiting a local chicheria to make corn beer, taking part in a pachamama ceremony or hand-picking their own produce from the lodge’s 10 acre ecological farm to be cooked by the lodge’s chef. Guests can also take part in birdwatching trips and mountain trekking activities.

Other features include a cosy lounge and dining room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows which look out over the surrounding valley and mountains, a wine cave and a welcoming terrace; perfect for stargazing on clear nights.
