Cordoba and the Sierras Chicas
The ancient hills of the Sierras Chicas are the destination for walking and riding...
Cordoba and the Sierras Chicas to the north, are one of the oldest and most venerable in all of Argentina and so well worth a mention and a visit on any itinerary. Without going into the details of the city itself (which is linked below), the main draw to this area for most visitors to Argentina is for the rounded and ancient hills that sit to the north of the city, the Sierras Chicas.
Similar to the regions that surround Buenos Aires, the rolling hills to the north of Cordoba were once famed for the many cattle and sheep ranches that provided the staple food source for Argentina as a whole. As the wealth of this industry has subsided many of these ranches have turned their focus to other forms of income, amongst them, tourism.
To ride, walk or bike through these ancient hills is a real pleasure and is something not often found in other destinations around the world…a true sense of being isolated from modern society. Many of the ranches have tried to stay as true to their traditional, Argentine, ways as is possible and so rooms are often still heated with wood and suppers cooked on an open fire. With the Sierras themselves thought to predate the mighty Andes, this truly is a glimpse into another world and another time!
