Review

The Vines is a property unlike any other in Mendoza. It reminds us a little of Awasi Patagonia in Chile in architectural terms and Tierra Hotels for its informal approach but very dedicated service. The villas here are not as isolated but the resort does have an exiting full program of activities that will appeal to a whole range of guests including participating in the process of wine making for a day. This and the first class restaurant make it an appealing proposition although we don’t think this property is as exciting as it is marketed to be.

Location

Spread over a 1,500 acres of vines in the Uco Valley region, The Vines is 1.5-hour transfer away from the airport and is surrounded by rugged mountain scenery.

Rooms

The accommodations are classed as “Villas” and come in the form of one or two bedrooms. They certainly don’t lack any space or comfort and are decorated in a very urban chic style, which may be a little too contemporary, or cliché to some but they claim that they took inspiration from the palette colours of the Uco Valley so you will find a range of subdued yellows, browns and grey. No expense was spared in the use of the materials and fittings. You will enjoy 1900 square feet/180 square metres to 2700 square feet/250 square metres space in the larger villas. They all come with state of the art technology specs that you would expect these days from properties of this calibre. We do like the ample outdoor space allocated to each villa consisting of a private deck with an outdoor soaking tub, shower or plunge pool/hot tub as well as a rooftop terrace for sunbathing with Andes views in some of the villas.

Layout

The main building features the reception desk, where checking in and out is a very informal affair, a definite plus, in our view. The villas spread out in a curve trajectory to one side of the house. Half of the villas’ outside decked terraces overlook a man-made lagoon, which extends to the main building and definitely provides a visually pleasing feature to the resort. The remainder of the villas sit in row behind the lagoon facing villas but have their own artificial mini lagoon water feature at the front. Something to note here is that there is quite a distance between the main house and some of the villas. The same has to be said for the gym and the spa, which are found in off-site standalone buildings a few minutes walk from the main house. The gym is housed on a raised rectangular cement block providing fantastic views of the vineyards beneath whilst working out and which extend for hundreds of metres ahead.

Features

The Siete Fuegos (Seven Fires) restaurant is managed by celebrated Argentine chef Francis Mallman, a pioneer of Nouvelle Cuisine, and is renowned for its culinary concoctions. Guests can also enrol for cooking classes here to learn from first class chefs. The pool, bar, sun lounges make it an ideal location for a sunset cocktail before tucking into a great meal. The Spa on the other hand is a sub-terrain space.
