As one of the oldest and most powerful countries in Latin America, Colombia has a wealth of history to be uncovered. This itinerary gives you a glimpse of this proud heritage by taking a look at a few of the country's most important museums and World Heritage sites. Rounding things off in the vibrant city of Cartagena, where the Caribbean meets South America could not be a more fitting end to a superb itinerary!
Travel to Colombia
International flight to Bogota. There is now a direct service from London which takes just over 11 hours.
Bogota
After breakfast you will have half day visit to the historic centre of Bogota known as La Candelaria. You will also visit Bolivar Square, the Botero Museum and the Gold Museum, one the finest of its kind in the world. Your day will end with a visit to the Santuario de Monserrate, a symbol of Bogotá. You will ride the cable car or funicular to reach it at 500m. The site offers the incredible panorama of the city on one side and the Andes on the other.
San Agustin
Transfer to the airport in for your flight to Neiva and then you are taken on a scenic journey along the extensive floodplains of the Magdalena River valley passing fruit, maize and coffee plantations via the town of Villavieja before arriving to San Agustín. The following day you will visit the Archaeological Park & Alto de los Idolos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site to look at the funerary complexes with some of the most well preserved tombs that still show some of the original paintwork and some of the largest stone figures discovered so far.
Cartagena
You will be transferred by road to Neiva airport for your flight to Cartagena via Bogotá and taken to your hotel. You will start the next day with a morning Panoramic City Tour which will take you to the famous Monasterio and Iglesia de La Popa built in 1606 from where the best city and seaviews are waiting. Your last day will be free but you may opt to do a half day visit to local markets and a cooking lesion with lunch or a walking city tour.
Caribbean Island
Head to either Rosario or Baru Islands for an overnight stay and a free day to relax on the beach. If you are on Barú you can head to the beaches of Playa Blanca, Playita de Cholón, Playa de los Muertos and Playa Bobo. On the Rosario islands, visit the reef of the archipelago of Nuestra Señora del Rosario as well as the islands of Tesoro, Múcura and Maravilla. Enjoy snorkeling and other water sports.
Cartagena
Boat transfer back to Cartagena. You will be taken to your hotel arrival for your last night before heading home.
Head home
Met and transferred to the airport to fly to Bogotá to connect with your international flight home.
